Chapter 12

Before Dullahan had a chance to reach the table I slipped off the stool and disappeared between the crowded tables behind us. As I snuck away I heard Pooka say something along the lines of: “he looks mad Trix, Trix? Where did you go. Did you just leave me to face him alone? You traitor!”

There was no way in hell I was going to let Dullahan lecture me about everything that had just happened with Banshee. Not when there was a party going on.

He’d have plenty of time to bore me to tears on the three-day carriage ride home.

Besides the conference was going to start soon and I hadn’t cashed in my free wheel spin coupon yet. Naturally, I headed straight to the casino area, squeezing through the crammed in crowd.

It’s a good job I’m not claustrophobic. I thought, it’s a shame I’m a bit people-phobic though. This is awful. At least they’re not talking to me… yet.

After aptly squeezing through the bulk of the crowd, I found myself at the casino section. It looked more like a Scarborough amusements arcade than the Vegas strip.

Lights blinked, coins clattered and annoying noises blared as fae placed bets, sunk money into slot machines, and generally seemed to forget the old saying of: “the house always wins”.

I wandered through the gaming area and sidled past a poker game just as a merrow slammed down a hand of cards and declared: “full house bitches!” to the disappointment of the other fae at the table.

I was a little jealous, I’d always wanted to win a hand of poker, you know one of those hands where everyone goes all in, and scoop a huge pile of chips up in my arms. I think everyone that grew up watching American TV has that desire hidden in them somewhere.

As I slid around the corner of a large slot machine I saw my goal. The wheel of fortune. My ticket to a free prize and some guilt-free gambling fun.

I’d never been much of a gambler back home. It didn’t help that my dad lost half his paycheck every month on football bets. He literally never won, but he still threw his money away week in, week out.

Don’t get me wrong, I wasn’t opposed to gambling, I just never had enough spare cash to see it as worth the risk. My mum had always told me that gambling is fine if you’re prepared to lose the money you’ve bet.

As a minimum wage worker, I never had money I was prepared to lose.

But right now, it wasn’t my money. So I pranced towards the wheel praying that fortune would be on my side.

“Ah another party guest ready to spend their hard-earned free coupon I see!” An overly excited selkie announced as I walked towards him.

“I thought you guys all spoke like robots?” I asked.

“I don’t know what that is but it sounds fun!”

He sounded like one of those annoyingly happy voices from old arcade games. He was wearing a white and red pinstriped hat on top of his bubble mask.
